An Tanaiste Meets Local Chamber

Buncrana Chamber of Commerce met with the Tanaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Ms Mary Coughlan, on Friday 21 November 2008 at their offices on Railway Road, Buncrana.

The Chamber have made repeated efforts to meet with An Tanaiste, since her appointment, and were delighted that their efforts were rewarded with a meeting lasting nearly an hour and a half.

An Tanaiste listened to the concerns raised by the Chamber regarding the unique difficulties that businesses in Buncrana and the Peninsula have to struggle with. They highlighted the issues of the border proximity, the Sterling – Euro trading difficulties and impact the current climate is having on the local economy.   The Chamber was assured of a collaborative approach between her office and them, to address the matters discussed. 

Paddy McLaughlin Chairman of Chamber of Commerce commented ‘It was a very positive meeting, we were delighted An Tanaiste could spend the time to listen to our concerns and over the coming months the Chamber office will be in contact with the office of An Tanaiste pursue these matters.’


Business Watch Meeting a Success

Buncrana Chamber of Commerce hosted the first Business Watch meeting on 17 November in Inishowen Gateway Hotel and was pleased to have a great turnout despite the terrible weather.

The Buncrana Chamber of Commerce was delighted to bring the Business Watch Team to Inishowen as it was the first time this kind of event was run in the Peninsula.

Business Watch is a security initiative, which has been designed by An Garda Siochana and it brings the business community together to prevent and reduce crime

Paul Wallace, Crime Prevention Officer was the main speaker and covered topics such as credit card fraud, counterfeit notes, ATM fraud and confidence fraudsters.  It gave give advice on how to identify counterfeit notes and goods, questions to ask, and how to reduce the risks.


 

Sgt Wallace works in association with the Buncrana Garda Team, Community Liaison Officer Brendan Roache and Superintendent James Cohen, who were also in attendance. 

The seminar was well received and the Buncrana Chamber of Commerce looks forward to holding another Seminar in the new year, focusing on Shoplifting.

Paddy McLaughlin, Chairman stated ‘We would like to thank Sgt Wallace, Superintendent Cohen and Officer Roache for their time and look forward to a continued working relationship.  The Chamber of Commerce would also like to thank all the business people for braving the weather and attending this seminar, we hope they found it beneficial.  Additionally we would like to thank Neil Doherty Roe and Rona McLaughlin for organising the event.’


Buncrana Tourist Office will remain open for the winter. 

The Buncrana Chamber of Commerce will be remaining in the Tourist office during the winter months.  We are delighted that we can provide the resources to keep the office open and provide limited services for Tourists coming to the area.

Opening Hours Thursday - Saturday 10.00am - 4.30pm

The Chamber of Commerce recognises that tourism is vital to the development of Buncrana and Inishowen area and are therefore delighted to be in a position to ensure that guests to our area are catered for. 


A dark end to 2008 as Christmas Street Lights Committee says farewell
